1996 CFL Review: Ottawa Disbands, Divisional Alignment Changes
The 120-year old Ottawa Rough Riders suspended operations following the 1996 season. The CFL continued in 1997 with 8 teams with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers playing in the Eastern Division. For the 1996 season the CFL returned to its traditional format, featuring an East-West divisional alignment. In 1995, the league had adopted a different alignment, featuring a Northern Division with 9 Canadian-based teams and a Southern Division with 5 U.S.-based expansion teams. But after that season the 1995 CFL-champion Baltimore Stallions moved to Montreal—and reintroduced the name Alouettes—while the other U.S.-based teams suspended operations.
